Tonight's meeting of the White County Commission marks the final regular session for the current board before newly elected county officials and commissioners take office later this month.

Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. in the third-floor courtroom of the White County Courthouse to consider a relatively light agenda, but one that includes several items affecting county roads, public safety and future capital projects.

Among the scheduled business are resolutions to establish 25 mph speed limits on portions of South Fork Road and Jolley Road, reduce the speed limit on Scotts Gulf Road, adopt a new 300-foot rule for beer permits, and appropriate funding for capital projects during the current fiscal year. Commissioners will also hear monthly reports, approve committee meeting minutes and consider other routine county business.

While the published agenda does not include any discussion of commissioner compensation, there has been local speculation that the topic could surface before the meeting concludes. Neighboring Warren County recently approved a plan tying commissioner pay to the county executive's salary, eliminating the need for commissioners to vote on future raises themselves.

Whether that conversation happens tonight remains to be seen, but with this being the final meeting before a new commission takes office on Aug. 31, residents may want to pay close attention to any additional discussion that develops beyond the printed agenda.

Main Street Journal - Sparta will have complete coverage of all votes, discussion and any other developments following adjournment.
