A new proposal moving through the Tennessee legislature would make it a crime for people in the United States illegally to operate large commercial vehicles in the state.

House Bill 1706, sponsored by State Rep. Jason Zachary, would make it a Class A misdemeanor for an illegal immigrant to drive a commercial motor vehicle in Tennessee. The legislation would also make it a crime for someone to knowingly allow a person who is in the country illegally to operate one of those vehicles.
