The lights dropped and the room went still, but it didn’t take long for the energy to build inside the White County High School auditorium. Over two nights — April 17 and 18 — the school’s drama program delivered a full-scale production of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, a performance that carried the feel of something bigger than a typical school show. For new drama sponsor Deborah Hunter, it also marked a first impression — and one that leaned on decades of experience to bring a fast-moving, character-driven story to life on a local stage.
Hunter, who brings more than 30 years of theater experience and over 20 directed productions to the program, chose a story with built-in connection. Based on Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, the musical follows a 12-year-old who suddenly learns he doesn’t quite belong in the world he thought he knew. It’s that sense of identity — and the pressure of figuring out where you fit — that gave the production its edge, resonating both on stage and with an audience that packed the seats to watch it unfold.
