The White County High School softball season came to an end Friday night as the Warriorettes ran out of answers against Livingston Academy in the District Tournament. White County was searching for one more spark after fighting its way through the elimination bracket on Thursday, but the Wildcats answered every Warriorette push and eventually pulled away for a 12-2 victory to advance to the championship game while ending White County’s season.
After two scoreless innings, the Warriorettes were the first team to break through in the top of the third. Abbi Hutson started the rally with a single to right before Addison Norvell dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. Kylie Norvell followed with a walk and Anna McCulley moved both runners up with a groundout. With two outs, Callie Phillips came through with the big hit, lining a single into right field to score both Hutson and Kylie Norvell for a 2-0 White County lead. Addison Howell was then hit by a pitch and Annie Burrier singled to load the bases before Livingston escaped the inning without further damage.
Livingston Academy answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. The Wildcats used a single and a double to plate their first run before adding another hit later in the frame to tie the game. A two-out RBI single gave Livingston its first lead of the night at 3-2 before Annie Burrier recorded a strikeout to strand another runner.
Neither team pushed a run across in the fourth inning. White County went down in order in the top half, while Burrier worked around a walk and a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the inning to keep the Warriorettes within one run heading into the fifth.
The Wildcats added to their lead in the fifth inning after opening the frame with a double. Livingston followed with a bunt single and then another RBI hit to make it 4-2. Later in the inning, a two-run double stretched the advantage to four runs before another run scored on a groundout to push the lead to 7-2.
White County threatened in the top of the sixth when Burrier singled and courtesy runner Kami Clark moved into scoring position after another single from AK Wallace. A groundout advanced both runners, giving the Warriorettes two runners in scoring position with two outs, but Livingston recorded the final out before White County could cut into the deficit.
Livingston put the game away in the bottom half of the inning. After a one-out groundout opened the frame, the Wildcats strung together five straight hits, including three RBI singles and a two-run double, to extend the lead to 11-2. Livingston later added another run on an RBI single to give Livingston the run-rule win.
Burrier started in the circle for the Warriorettes and turned in four innings of work. The freshman allowed four runs on six hits while striking out six batters and issuing just one walk. Senior Mabry Taylor took over in the fifth inning and faced fifteen batters in relief, allowing eight runs on nine hits and one walk.
White County closed the season with a 10-20 record, finishing just one win shy of reaching the District Championship round. The Warriorettes will graduate Norvell, Phillips, Taylor, Howell, and Jada Wright next week, leaving several key leadership spots to replace heading into the offseason. With only three juniors currently on the roster, White County will lean heavily on its younger players to step into bigger roles next spring.
