Five-set payback

White County had the lead twice Monday night. Cookeville took it away twice. After four sets, the Warriorettes were right back where they started: needing one more win against the team that had swept them in August.

White County took the opening set 25-19, but Cookeville answered 25-20. The third was the closest of the night, with the Warriorettes pulling out a 25-23 win to move within one set of the match. Again, the Cavaliers refused to let them finish it. Cookeville won the fourth 25-20, leaving the rematch to a race to 15.

This time, White County held on. The Warriorettes won the fifth set 15-11, taking the match 3-2 and getting a very different result from their first meeting with Cookeville.

Ashlyn Selby and Alli Beth Stebing each had 14 kills to lead White County’s attack. Selby added five blocks and eight digs, while Stebing served five aces and picked up nine digs. Maddi Henry gave the Warriorettes nine more kills and five blocks.

The work at the net went deeper than those three. Lanie Naaktgeboren had seven blocks and five kills, Mallori Swindell added nine kills and three blocks, and Harper Broyles contributed three kills and a block. Rhaleigh Cloyd finished with 32 assists, while Swindell added 18 to go with her work on the attack.

Miah Jo Swindell led White County with 18 digs and matched Stebing’s five aces. Kaylin Cunningham added six digs and an ace, Kately Howard had two digs, and Broyles also picked up a dig.

The Warriorettes host Lebanon Tuesday before traveling to Warren County Friday.
