After a nine-run outburst on Monday, White County Middle School couldn’t find the same rhythm at the plate Wednesday night. The Warriors were held scoreless, and Upperman took advantage early, pulling away for an 8-0 win to stay in the district tournament’s winner’s bracket.
Jack Dicus provided a brief spark in the top of the first, beating out an infield single. But back-to-back strikeouts followed, and the Warriors were unable to build on the opportunity.
Upperman seized control in the bottom half of the inning and never let go. A single, double, and walk loaded the bases with no outs. A fielder’s choice recorded an out at second, but brought home the game’s first run. Another walk reloaded the bases, and a pair of singles pushed the lead to 4-0. Two wild pitches extended the margin to 6-0 before the inning came to a close.
Both teams scattered a few baserunners over the next couple of innings, but neither could break through again until the fourth. There, Upperman added two more runs, taking advantage of a walk, a pair of errors, and a balk to stretch the lead to 8-0.
White County went down in order in the fifth, bringing the run-rule game to an end.
The Warriors used four pitchers on the night. Carson Burton worked the opening inning, allowing six runs on four hits while striking out one and walking two. Kolton Sanders and Owen Lewis each followed with a scoreless inning, and Carsen Smith finished the game on the mound.
White County will now turn its attention to a win-or-go-home matchup against Avery Trace, the same team the Warriors defeated 9-1 on Monday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. tomorrow, with the winner advancing to face Upperman at 5 p.m. Friday.
